RALEIGH — As required by law, the State Board of Elections office on Friday randomly determined the order of candidates on the primary and general election ballots in the new election for the 9th Congressional District.

The candidate filing period for the 9th District ended at 5 p.m. Friday.

As a result of a random drawing, 9th Congressional District candidates whose last names begin with the letter “F” will appear first in contests in the primary, second primary (if necessary) and general election. A coin flip determined that additional candidates will follow in alphabetical order: F, G, H, I, J...E.

The letter “F” was chosen from a glass bowl containing cards with all letters of the alphabet printed on them. Heads on a coin flip determined that candidates would appear on ballots in alphabetical order.

The ballot order selection process was streamed on Facebook Live and is available on the State Board’s Facebook page,

The order of candidates on official ballots is determined by N.C.G.S. § 163A-1114(c).

A new election was ordered in the 9th Congressional District after a four-day hearing by the State Board of Elections determined that frauds and irregularities occurred to such an extent that the public’s confidence had been undermined and that a new election is warranted.
