Richmond County man charged with assault, kidnapping Richmond County Jail

ROCKINGHAM — A man is facing multiple charges after allegedly assaulting a former lover.

Investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office say 31-year-old John Thomas Grant made contact with his ex-girlfriend, who has an active domestic violence protective order against him, on Easter Sunday.

On Tuesday, Grant allegedly assaulted the woman and later forced his way into her home and forced her and two children to get in a vehicle. Investigators say he was located by a deputy in Hamlet and taken into custody without incident.

Grant is charged with three counts of second-degree kidnapping, breaking and entering, interfering with emergency communications, intimidating a witness and communicating threats. Court records show is he also charged with two counts each of assault on a female, and violating a domestic violence protective order.

He is being held in the Richmond County Jail without bond and is scheduled to have a hearing on Thursday.

Grant also has similar pending charges from 2018: assault on a female, violating a domestic violence protective order, domestic criminal trespassing, intimidating a witness and communicating threats.

He is also facing four traffic violations, including operating an ATV in the Sandhills Game Lands.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Grant has no previous convictions in the state.

He is scheduled to appear in court May 6 on all criminal charges and May 15 on the traffic violations.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
