ROCKINGHAM – Tom Cox, Rockingham native, has always been an athlete. In junior and senior high school he played soccer, but with the cards he was dealt, he knew he needed to search further into athletics and training to find his true fit.

Cox began to lift weights in high school and loved the focus and independence that this provided more than working on the specific skills other sports required. Weight lifting also allowed for him to take more control of the outcomes, which became a huge draw to the sport. It was all about control.

At East Carolina University, Cox wanted to study something he loves, so his focus became health and fitness. When he came home to Richmond County (following graduation) he began to work at FirstHealth and help those around his hometown, including homeschool students, in a physical education program. He also became a personal trainer. As he helped others, he also continued to better himself.

Two years ago, Cox entered a competition hoping to place for his height, but fell short of a title. On Saturday, September 23, 2017, he entered the same competition and took home the title for, not just his height division, but also for men’s overall physique.

When asked what this meant to him Cox stated, “It was the best day of my life. I have been working for this and extending my prep to prepare for this moment.”

Cox has been motivated to better himself since high school, and this win does not change anything. Rather than remaining satisfied, Cox is competing again in South Carolina and is then preparing for one of the biggest national events in Miami, Florida.

“I want people to see this as a beacon of light.” Cox stated. “If you work hard enough and have the motivation, you can do what you set your mind to. Push yourself and you can succeed.”
