ROCKINGHAM — Sheriff James Clemmons for the second time Friday issued a statement that no officers were involved in a fatal incident Thursday afternoon.

WSOC-TV, citing unnamed “officials,” reported that someone was killed by a Rockingham Police officer.

Clemmons said the television station is presenting false information and that no officers anywhere in Richmond County were involved in a shooting.

Rockingham Police Chief Billy Kelly also confirmed that "no such incident" occurred in the city of Rockingham and that no officers were involved in a shooting.

Kelly said there were "no incidents of any issue ... It was a calm night" and residents enjoyed the Fourth of July festivities.

The chief said he has reached out to the station about the error.

The incident in question, which occurred in the Little Philadelphia community, involved fireworks and is still under investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.

The N.C. State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist.

More information is expected to be released later today.
