ELLERBE – The Woodpecker seems an appropriate name for the new home and garden business in downtown Ellerbe.

Its proprietor, Heather Raines, can frequently be found in the back of her shop, or at home, working with wood, fashioning it into personalized signs. In fact, she designs and creates all but a few of the wooden items she sells in her shop.

Raines’ husband, Josh, derived the name for her shop, and Raines constructed her business’ sign bearing the name, The Woodpecker.

Raines has always enjoyed making various crafts and had wanted, for quite some time, to turn this hobby into a business. Her husband knew it was her heart’s desire to own her own shop and on Valentine’s day of this year, gave her the lease for the building. The Woodpecker opened for business earlier this summer on July 25.

“I really attempt to sell as much local product as possible,” Raines said.

In addition to her decorative and personalized wooden signs, Raines offers Heather’s Homemade Candles, Stewart’s Pee Dee Bees honey, lip balm, and beeswax candles, Jewel la la snap jewelry, flags, wreaths, homemade soaps, and seasonal décor. Raines also sells house flags, garden flags, door mats, and mailbox covers.

“If someone were to see a sign on Pinterest or somewhere, they can bring a picture of it to the shop and I can replicate it for them,” Raines said of her woodwork.

Raines also makes vinyl decals and plans to offer screen printing in the future.

She receives great satisfaction from her job, explaining, “It makes a difference when you enjoy what you do every day.”

The Woodpecker, located at 2056 Main Street in Ellerbe, is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The shop is closed on Sunday and Monday.
