HAMLET — Richmond County Schools has cancelled classes for students and staff on Thursday due to the threat of hazardous conditions from Hurricane Dorian.

The district made the announcement on Facebook just before 3 p.m. Wednesday.

However, the post said the Richmond Community College would be operating on a normal schedule and advised students of Richmond Early College High School to use discretion when deciding whether or not to attend classes.

“Your safety is always our priority,” the post read. “RCC officials will continue to monitor conditions.”

Those students were encouraged to check the RichmondCC and REaCH Facebook pages for updates.

Counties to the east of Richmond — including Scotland, Hoke, Lee, Robeson, and Marlboro County, South Carolina — are under a tropical storm warning.

Richmond County is expected to receive up to 2 inches of rain from the storm, which could make landfall in Carteret County as it skirts up the coast.
