ROCKINGHAM — New city garbage trucks should be on the way soon.

The Rockingham City Council voted Tuesday night to approve an installment purchase contract for two new Heil DP5000 25-cubic yard rear loaders from Carolina Environmental Systems, Inc. The loaders will be mounted on 2019 Navistar 7400 cab/chassis.

City Manager Monty Crump said only one bank returned a bid: First Bank.

The city will finance $362,480 over five years — making payments in September and March — with an interest rate of 2.1 percent.

Crump said the deal should be closed before the end of the week.

When Councilman Gene Willard asked about the lifetime of the vehicles, Crump said as long as the city buys a quality product and the equipment is taken care of, they’ll last a while.

Crump told the council last month that the purchase is to replace two of the city’s existing units, one being 23 years old, the other 17.

Delivery is expected around Sept. 17.
