ROCKINGHAM — ‘Tis the season for downtown to be filled with holiday cheer as Christmas on the Square kicks off again.

The annual event is held the first Saturday of December, with this year being Dec. 7 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in Harrington Square.

Christmas on the Square is well into its second decade and is sponsored by Rockingham Downtown Corporation, Richmond County Tourism Authority, and the City of Rockingham.

There will be plenty for the entire family to enjoy, including: a free kids’ zone; the Rockingham Lions Club vision van; fingerprinting, sponsored by Rockingham Police Department; 85 food, arts and crafts vendors; entertainment; and, of course, Santa Claus. There will also be cars, bikes, and trucks on display throughout the day, including vehicles from the Rockingham National Guard unit and Fast Trax Mudbog.

Toys for Tots will have a drop box set up at the stage to collect toys for children. Each year vendors have been generous in their donations, and the public is also asked to bring a new unwrapped gift to share with a child. All the toys will be donated locally.

The live entertainment will begin at 10:30 a.m. with vocalist Lisa Patterson. Following will be: the L.J. Bell Elementary Chorus at 11 ; Mount Olive preschool children at 11:30; Bold Moves Dance Studio at noon, Southern Pines-based acoustic classic rock band Crossroads Angels at 1 p.m.; dance team at 2; jazz guitarist Patrick Marier at 2:30; and Roberdel Baptist Children’s Choir at 3.

Carolyn Ford has been heading the event for more than 20 years and looks forward to it each year.

“We are excited about having a lot of new craft vendors this year, as well as having Rockingham National Guard and Fast Trax Mudbog joining us for the first time,” said Ford.

All are encouraged to come out and participate in the fun.
