ROCKINGHAM — The smell and sight of smoky skies have many people — including crews with the Rockingham Fire Department — wondering: Where’s the fire?

According to the N.C. Forest Service the smoke is coming from two controlled burns near Hoffman.

One fire, by the Forest Service, is adjacent to Morrison Correctional Institution. The other is a private burn nearby.

Forest Service officials say the north winds are blowing the smoke down U.S. 1 toward Rockingham.
