Rockingham Police charge man with shooting another in the chest

ROCKINGHAM — A man was arrested Thursday, charged in shooting earlier this month.

According to a report from the Rockingham Police Department, an officer responded to the emergency room in reference to a gunshot victim around 1:56 a.m. on Jan. 12.

The victim, 28-year-old Jeffrey David, of Hoffman, had been shot in the chest, according to the report. The incident reportedly happened at a residence on Rockingham Road around 1:45 a.m.

The suspect was reported as driving a tan SUV.

Officers arrested the suspect, 27-year-old Jerel Gomez “Jersey” Williams, of Cauthen Drive, at the Perdue Farms plant on Long Drive around 9:15 a.m., according to an arrest report.

Williams is charged with one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

The report states Williams was read, and subsequently waived, his Miranda rights and processed. He was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $50,000 secured bond.

Williams is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 13.

Online state records show Williams has no other pending charges or prior convictions in North Carolina.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
