HAMLET — Another large-scale event has fallen victim to the coronavirus.

Ann Wheeler of the Hamlet Lion’s Club announced early Saturday morning that the Richmond County Agricultural Fair is canceled for 2020.

“After 62 years and with a heavy heart, the Hamlet Lions Club is cancelling the 2020 Richmond County Agricultural Fair,” Wheeler wrote on the fair’s Facebook group page. “Because of the Pandemic that has hit our country and county, the officers and members of the Club feel that for the health of our attendees we should cancel the (RCAF) for 2020. We are hoping to see you all when the fair resumes in 2021.”

This is the latest in a string of cancelations due to the ongoing pandemic.

The Ellerbe Lions Club canceled its annual Fourth of July Jamboree, but club members had hoped to hold an event in the fall.

The Richmond County Chamber of Commerce last month canceled Hoptoberfest, the annual craft beer and chicken wing festival which was scheduled for October at Rockingham Dragway.

The City of Rockingham has also canceled every installment of the Plaza Jam summer concert series at Cole Plaza through August.

The North Carolina State Fair was also canceled for this year.

With Gov. Roy Cooper’s announcement earlier this week that North Carolina would remain under Phase 2 for another five weeks, it’s likely that the September concert will be canceled as well, though the city has not yet announced an official decision.
