Lumbee portrait exhibit on display at UNCP museum

PEMBROKE — A portrait exhibition ‘Lumbee Indians: A People and a Place’ is on display at the Museum of Southeast American Indian at UNC Pembroke.

An exhibit opening will be held at 1 p.m. on April 13. The museum is located inside Old Main.

The exhibition explores Lumbee people and culture in portraiture. The Lumbee experience can be seen through their expressions, depth in their eyes, distinguished posture, lines that map their faces, engaging smiles, and contemplative gazes. The landscape photos act as portraits of places that have strong and distinct tribal and familial identities.

The photos are grouped together to collectively create a single image–a visual narrative of the Lumbee that tells a history and experience of family and home, land and water, faith and memory.

The featured photographers are Chip Cavan and Travis Dove. The exhibit also features historical photographs from the Museum of Southeast American Indian’s collection.
