COLUMN: Coerced funding bad for politics

After Durham businessman Greg Lindberg, state Republican Party Chairman Robin Hayes, and two of Lindberg’s business associates were indicted in an alleged bribery scheme, advocates of government-funded campaigns scurried to restate their argument. But the latest incident doesn’t make it any more persuasive.

First, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham blocked a bill to make the Mueller report public that passed the House 420-0. Then this weekend, Donald Trump continued his attacks on John McCain despite the Senator’s death seven months ago. Graham, who for years was seen as McCain’s sidekick, stayed quiet for the first few hours before offering tepid praise for McCain without rebuking the president.

ROCKINGHAM — Another third-party candidate has entered the race for a chance to go to Washington and represent the 9th District in the U.S. House of Representatives, bringing the total field to five.

Dragway reschedules race after rain

As a sign of appreciation for racers who attended this weekend annual Racers Appreciation Free Entry Race, the Rockingham Dragway burned 270 gallons of fuel in the Jet Dryer, sprayed 80 gallons of traction compound on the track and a crew of eight spent 18 hours on attempting to dry and prepare the racing surface.
