GREENSBORO — United States Attorney Matthew G.T. Martin announced (Thursday) that Assistant U.S. Attorney JoAnna McFadden has been appointed to serve as the district election officer for the Middle District of North  Carolina, and in that capacity is responsible for overseeing the District’s handling of complaints of election fraud and voting rights concerns in consultation with Justice  Department Headquarters in Washington.

GREENSBORO — Today, the Department of Justice announced it has  charged more than 14,200 defendants with firearms-related crimes during Fiscal Year 2020, despite the challenges of COVID-19 and its impact on the criminal justice process.

GREENSBORO — The Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services today announced nearly $42 million in funding to support state-level law enforcement agencies in combating the illegal manufacturing and distribution of methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl, carfentanil, and prescription opioids, of which $2,062,770 has been awarded to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety.

GREENSBORO — On April 30, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of North Carolina and the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division hosted a roundtable for community organizations to discuss the problem of sexual harassment in housing, U.S. Attorney Matthew G.T. Martin announced. The event included state and local fair housing agencies, a representative from Legal Aid of North Carolina’s Fair Housing Project, and numerous community organizations.

WASHINGTON —Duke University has agreed to pay the government $112.5 million to resolve allegations that it violated the False Claims Act by submitting applications and progress reports that contained falsified research on federal grants to the National Institutes of Health and to the Environmental Protection Agency, the Justice Department announced (Monday).

Greensboro — U.S. Attorney Matthew G.T. Martin announced today that the Middle District of North Carolina collected $2,235,279.81 in criminal and civil actions in Fiscal Year 2018. Of this amount, $1,719,336.45 was collected in criminal actions and $515,943.36 was collected in civil actions.
