HAMLET – Richmond Senior High School’s AP Art students submitted their work to the College Board in May.

The AP Art students’ portfolios were graded on a 1-6 level with 6 being a noteworthy – and rare – score.

Students in the Advanced Placement Art Class (AP Art) had to develop a concentration idea for their work, creating twelve works of art that show a variety of their skills and another twelve focusing on a certain topic of their choosing.

The AP Art segment was divided into three medias: three-dimensional (3D) as in pottery, sculptures made from various materials, etc; two-dimensional (2D) meaning illustrations, paintings, collages, or photos; and drawing, focusing primarily in stroke-based work such as painting, pen illustrations, or pencil works.

One of those artists was (Latasha) Alexandria Baker, who chose AP Art drawing specifically.

Baker chose to create her concentration based on the representation of her dreams, illustrating each one in a haunting manner, using the symbol of the third eye to distinguish the various forms in which she sees herself when she dreams.

Since childhood, Baker has had a tendency to have nightmares that center around her history of being bullied during her childhood; she chose to depict that through her art.

In her drawing “Resistance” (depicted), Baker illustrates an individual meant to represent herself fighting against unnaturally colored hands, grabbing at the distraught person who is trying to fight back as they pull him further and deeper into darkness.

Baker classifies herself as an artist who preferably works in surrealism and prides herself on her character designs and storytelling skills through art.

Baker plans to attend East Carolina University to earn a bachelor’s degree in studio art.

Her work, including the haunting images from her AP art portfolio, can be found on her website at alexandriabakerart.wixsite.com/alexandriabakerart.
