HAMLET – Although there was a light turnout from area citizens for the Wednesday, July 11 session of “Coffee with A Cop” at the Hamlet Senior Center at 102 Veterans’ Drive, this time taken from the busy schedule of the Hamlet Police Department allowed an opportunity to plan for establishing drop-off points for school supplies for the upcoming 2018-2019 year.

Officers present included Police Chief Scott Waters, School Resource Officer Anne Griffin, Patrol Captain Marc Terry, Captain Detective Randy Dover, Lieutenant Detective Richard Jordan, Patrolman Brandon Cribb, Sergeant Detective Lampley, Sergeant Anthony Jacobs, and K-9 Officer Greg Stone.

Senior Center Director Nikki Sewell and the police officers brainstormed about places throughout Hamlet that would be convenient and accessible to serve as drop-off spots for the abundance of needed supplies as the new school year is only a month away. Notebooks, crayons, markers,  highlighters, colored pencils, #2 pencils, pencil boxes, erasers, glue sticks, etc…..the lists are long and can become expensive, especially for families with more than one child.

Boxes will be set up for donating the supplies around town at locations such as the Senior Center, the Hamlet Police Department, City Hall, and the Hamlet Public Library, as well as area businesses.

Another idea discussed was “Crammin’ the Cruiser,” where local citizens could drop off school supplies directly to the police officers while parked outside Hamlet grocery stores the mornings of Saturday, July 21 and Saturday, July 28. More information will be forthcoming as locations are secured.

Donations will be accepted through August. After the supplies are received, they will be turned over to the   Richmond County Schools for distribution to students in need in the Hamlet schools.

The next meeting of “Coffee With A Cop” will be Wednesday, August 8 at 9 a.m. at the Hamlet Senior Center at 102 Veterans Drive, next to the City Lake. This is part of a national initiative sponsored by the Department of Justice and is intended to support better policing through direct interaction with members of the community.
