Escaped inmate caught in Rockingham

ROCKINGHAM – An inmate who spent several hours on the run has been apprehended.


Stephon Easterling, 28, was caught by a prison special response team on Leak Street in Rockingham around 6:30 p.m., according to a press release from the N.C. Department of Adult Correction.


Easterling, who was incarcerated at Anson Correctional Institution, reportedly walked off of work release job site around 10:20 a.m. Wednesday.

Prison officials say Easterling will be transferred to a higher-custody prison and will face escape charges.

Easterling, from Hamlet, was convicted in 2022 and was set for release in February of 2024.
