Faith and the Basement

Lance Jenkins

“But Jesus said, Suffer the little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”  Matthew 19:14 (KJV)

The house my children grew up in had a full, finished basement and that is where my husband’s workshop was housed for nearly thirty-five years.  Over time this became the place where anything that was in need of repair went…..down to the basement.  Whether it was a broken lamp, bookcase or toy, my husband took it downstairs and when it came back upstairs it was whole again!  I must add that my husband is an engineer and seems to be able to figure out how to repair most anything.

One day, while having a conversation with my son, who was probably 6 or 7 years old at the time, about the things that Daddy took into the basement and came back to him fixed, he made this statement, “if I broke my arm, Daddy could take me to the basement and fix it.”  Oh, the innocence and faith of children!  They are so trusting and what faith they have in us as parents.

This is the kind of faith we as Christians need, totally trusting in Jesus.  In the New Testament, Luke tells us in Chapter 18, that we must become like children to enter the kingdom of God.  Just as my son trusted in his earthly father, we must learn to trust our Heavenly Father.  He wants us to trust Him with everything.

No matter our age, we should maintain that childlike faith in God which comes from putting our trust in Him.

Pray that God will help you to focus on Him in a childlike way, realizing your dependence on Him for everything.
