Flood advisory in effect; Old Fashioned Christmas canceled in Hamlet

ROCKINGHAM — Richmond and surrounding counties remain under a flood advisory until 3:30 p.m.

The advisory was issued by the National Weather Service late Friday morning as heavy rains moved through the area.

According to the NWS: “Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated steady moderate to heavy rain over south central North Carolina. This will cause minor flooding in urban areas and in areas of poor   drainage, along with rising water on small streams and in ditches. Up to one and a half inches of rain has already fallen in the last several hours, with more steady rain moving in from the south.”

Stanly, Moore, Montgomery, Anson, Scotland and Hoke counties are also listed in the advisory.

“Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway,” the advisory reads. “The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Move to higher ground.

“Leaves may be clogging some drainage areas, causing an increased risk for water to back up on some roads. Use extra caution when driving today.”

There are social media reports of ponding on U.S. 74 between Rockingham and Wadesboro.

The rain resulted in the cancellation of Hamlet’s Old Fashioned Christmas scheduled for Friday evening. According to a Facebook post, there will be no make-up day for the event.

The NWS also expects dense areas of fog to this evening in through the overnight hours.

Drivers are urged to use caution.
