JCPenney Hosts Back-to-School Bash in Rockingham

ROCKINGHAM -- Drivers and passing by community members may have noticed a plethora of emergency service vehicles in JCPenney's parking lot Saturday morning.

ROCKINGHAM -- Richmond Observer accident reporter/photographer Harold Dawkins rushed to the scene Friday of a vehicle that had run off a boat ramp into the Pee Dee River. The incident occurred at the Pee Dee River boat landing located at the bridge on Highway 74.

The vehicle did have an occupant inside, and the driver had sustained what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The occupant was removed from the vehicle by an individual who was at the boat landing, and First Health Richmond EMS transported the driver to the hospital. The Richmond County Sheriff's Office is continuing its investigation of the incident.

On Thursday afternoon around 6:15, East Rockingham Fire Department was dispatched to a vehicle fire at the intersection of Hwy 1 South and Eason Drive. There were no injuries to the driver and the fire was quickly extinguished upon the arrival of the fire department. Officers from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office assisted with Traffic control until the scene was cleared. Units were back in service at 7:00 pm.

Lessons of a Camping Trip: Take Food

When I was about 12-years-old, my cousin and I wanted to campout overnight at my grandfather's pond. But my dad told us that we could only campout if we found our own food because we would not be able to take food from home. The only thing that we could take from our house was cooking oil, cornmeal, a frying pan and salt and pepper.
