Homeless man charged with breaking into vehicles in Hamlet

HAMLET — A homeless man is accused of breaking into and damaging two vehicles late last month.

According to court documents, 18-year-old Arahai Wendigo Turner, whose address is listed as streets of Rockingham, broke into a 2003 Chevrolet S10 and a 1990 Ford Bronco on June 26.

Turner allegedly damaged the ignitions of both vehicles and is accused of trying to steal the S10.

According to a warrant, Turner ran away from the arresting officer, Hamlet Police Department’s D. Scherer, while being taken to the jail.

Tuner is charged with: two felony counts of breaking or entering a motor vehicle; one felony count of attempted larceny; two misdemeanor counts of injury to personal property; and one misdemeanor count of resisting a public officer.

He was booked into the Richmond County Jail, where he remains under a combined $30,000 secured bond. According to jail records, the bond for the resisting charge is $25,000.

Turner is scheduled to appear in court on the aforementioned charges July 22, as well as on one felony count of larceny of a motor vehicle, online records show. The latter charge is from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Court records show Tuner also has an Aug. 5 court date on one count of misdemeanor larceny, one count of resisting a public officer and three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Turner has no previous adult criminal convictions in the state.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
