Improvements coming to N.C. 24/27 in Stanly, Montgomery counties

ALBEMARLE — The N.C. Department of Transportation recently awarded a $64.8 million contract to widen a 7-mile stretch of N.C. 24/27 between N.C. 740 (Spaulding Street) in Albemarle and east of the Pee Dee River.

The project includes widening N.C. 24/27 to a four-lane divided roadway with improvements at several intersections in the corridor, including a roundabout at Anderson Road/Barnard Road.

The project also calls for reduced conflict intersections to be built at Anderson Road, Anderson Grove Road, and Sweet Home Church Road. This kind of innovative design improves traffic flow and safety and allows drivers to reach their destinations more quickly. Drivers from the side roads are redirected into turning right onto the highway. They then may use a dedicated lane a short distance away to safely make a U-turn to go in the opposite direction.

Construction may get underway as early as Nov. 25, with completion anticipated for late 2023.
