Military helicopters touch down at Richmond County Airport during training mission

Charlie Melvin - Richmond Observer

ROCKINGHAM —The U.S. military is once again using the Richmond County Airport for training exercises.

On Tuesday afternoon, a small crowd gathered at the airport to watch two Black Hawk helicopters touch down and take off as part of a wide-ranging rescue mission, according to Airport Manager Jason Gainey.

Gainey, who was out of town, said the mission started on the coast and worked its way to Richmond County around 5 p.m. before moving to a gravel pit in neighboring Anson County.

The airport is often used by the military for training.

In October 2019 and March 2020, the airport was the site of air traffic control training by the Army.
