NORMAN — A convicted felon from Montgomery County currently on probation is in the Richmond County Jail after allegedly walking down the road waving a gun.
Deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Capel Mill Road in Norman on Tuesday in reference to a “suspicious male” carrying a firearm and a bottle and yelling while walking down the road, according to a press release.
The first deputy on scene reportedly saw 29-year-old Atlan Gage Williams, of Star, waving a rifle. The deputy reportedly gave Williams multiple commands to put the gun down and Williams eventually did before being detained.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies ran a background check on Williams and found he had a felony conviction. Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show that conviction was last month.
Williams was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a felon. He was booked into the Richmond County Jail at 12:55 a.m. Wednesday and is being held on a $20,000 secured bond.
Records show Williams was convicted Dec. 13, 2021 in Montgomery County of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and second-degree trespassing and was given a 60-month suspended sentence.
Williams was previously convicted of assault with a deadly weapon in 2016 and assault on an officer in 2013 and received probation in both of those cases, as well.
He was first convicted in 2010 of driving while impaired. His probation was revoked, landing him behind bars for two months.
Records show Williams has also been convicted on three counts of driving with revoked license.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
