ROCKINGHAM — What started out as a single big rig race has turned into a fall festival, combining motorsports and music at Rockingham Speedway in September.

Justin Jones, vice president of operations, announced Monday that the double race with rigs and trucks on Sept. 24 will also include a concert featuring country rapper Struggle Jennings and artist Brandon Hartt.

Hartt shot a video earlier this year at the track for his song “Good Years,” which was released on the anniversary of Dale Earnhardt’s death. Hartt also performed at the speedway’s open house in March.

“I’m very excited,” said Justin Jones, the speedway’s vice president of operations, who added that Jennings and Hartt will “put on a great show.”

The speedway initially announced in February that the FASS Big Rig Series would hold a race on that date. The following month, the CRS Super Truck Series was added to the bill.

Both organizations participated in the East Coast Truck Festival in October 2021.

CRS owner Billy Strehle said the truck race will be an invitational. All drivers are invited, they just have to pass a safety inspection.

“If you have a race truck, we’ll find somewhere to put you,” Strehle said.

Strehle was a competitive driver in the ARCA Truck Series and said CRS is the continuation of that series. This is the sixth year under the CRS banner, with more than 24 trucks currently registered, he added.

Registration just opened for the race and Strehle said eight drivers have signed up with more than 20 currently interested. Strehle said he’s hoping for at least 30-40 trucks and said they will field up to 99.

That race will comprise 50 laps around the oval in two 25-lap segments.

Drivers will compete for an overall purse and winners will be given out in each of the five classes: CRS Super Trucks; Open V8; Open V6; Super Truck; and Pro Trucks.

According to Strehle, the event has enough sponsorships for a $2,000 purse. However, he is hoping to add more sponsors in the coming months.

For the $40 ticket price, Jones said, “You can’t beat that for entertainment, really.”

That’s not the only racing event coming to the Rock this year.

The Carolina Mini Stock Challenge is scheduled for the roval on the first weekend in July.

Mini Stocks & UCARs from all over the country will compete for the opportunity to win $5,000,” the event description reads. “The two-day event will also provide teams the opportunity to experience the excitement of the high banks as well as the twist & turns of the Rockingham road course in this one-of-a-kind event.”

Fans will also have a chance to earn a little cash.

“Special drawings of $500 will be made during heat races and the feature event,” the description continues. “20 lucky fans will be selected prior to the race by the competing drivers, the fan partnered with the winning driver will also receive a $500 cash prize compliments of the Rockingham Summer Showdown, Rockingham Speedway & RedTide Canopies.”
