ROCKINGHAM — A downtown restaurant will soon be closing its doors after nearly a decade in business.

Pattan’s Downtown Grille announced on Facebook Thursday afternoon that it will be closing on Wednesday, Nov. 22.

“After eight and a half years, we have decided to close Pattan’s Downtown Grille,” owners Tim and Julia Pattan said in a statement. “While we have enjoyed every moment, the last three years have been very hard and we feel that it is time.”

The Pattans said they “never would have made it” without the support of several groups of people.

“To you, our great customers, we cannot express how grateful we are to you,” the Pattans said. “The friendships that we’ve made and seeing the faces of regular visitors has been pure joy.

“To you, our wonderful employees, with all of the craziness of a restaurant and with the craziness of an owner who pushed as hard as he could and his drive for perfection, you all made us a great team.

“To you, the City of Rockingham, the confidence you showed in us at the beginning and throughout the years, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You enabled us to accomplish a dream of ours.

“We look forward to enjoying a great and relaxing meal in this beautiful restaurant when the new tenants open … Again, thank you all. Here’s to a few more Pattan Specials and Pulled Pork Tacos!!”

The building is owned by the city of Rockingham and City Manager Monty Crump issued a statement regarding the closure, expressing the city’s “tremendous gratitude to Tim and Julia Pattan for eight and half years of dedicated restaurant service and for being exceptional partners with the city.”

According to a story by this writer for the Richmond County Daily Journal in November of 2014, Tim Pattan had been wanting to open a restaurant for a decade — with his Pee Dee Swamp Sauce on the market since 2003 — before signing a 10-year lease for $2,500 per month.

“Since 2015, local residents and visitors alike have flocked to the downtown dining hub for Tim’s award-winning BBQ and other Pattan’s favorites,” Crump said. “Pattan’s Downtown Grille made an indelible impact on revitalizing our downtown area and will always be attributed as a major contributor of the growth in Rockingham.

“We wish Tim, Julia, and the devoted staff of Pattan’s Downtown Grille the best in their future endeavors and are certain they will continue to be loyal partners and supporters in our community.”

However, Crump teased that the doors “will not remain closed for long,” and encouraged diners to stay tuned for “more details on the newest dining destination coming soon to Downtown Rockingham.”
