ROCKINGHAM — The National Weather Service has issued a slew of warnings along the Florida and Carolinas coasts as Tropical Storm Isaias makes its way north.

Isaias ramped up to an 80-mph Category 1 hurricane during Thursday night, shortly after pulling away from Hispaniola and will now churn through the Bahamas, just north of Cuba, before making a run along the Eastern seaboard of the United States this weekend to early next week.

It's been a fast start to the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, with four named storms already in the books and a new record for early-season development less than one month into the official start to the season. AccuWeather forecasters are now monitoring Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico waters for a possible flurry of new development during the first part of July, some of which could dampen the upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The combination of lingering tropical moisture and a weather battle zone will set the stage for repeating downpours that can lead to flooding across the lower mid-Atlantic and southern Atlantic coastal areas into the weekend. Forecasters say the flooding risk could extend into next week with excessive rainfall amounts predicted.

NWS: Florence Remnant Could Return to Carolinas

ROCKINGHAM— Florence may not be finished with the Carolinas just yet.

A remnant of the once-Category 4 hurricane that devastated parts of North and South Carolina over the weekend could be headed this way.

According to the National Weather Service, a low pressure system left over from Florence has looped back around and currently has gale-force winds. As of 8:07 p.m. Thursday, the system was 100 miles northeast of Bermuda heading southwest at 15 mph.

While the probability is only 20 percent, meteorologists say the low could develop tropical characteristics over the next five days.
