Severe thunderstorm warning issued for northern Richmond County

ROCKINGHAM — As clouds continue to pass through the area, the National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning throughout the hour.

The warning, which is set to expire at 5 p.m., is for northern Richmond County, Anson and Montgomery counties.

The areas expected to see the worst of the storm include Ellerbe, Norman and Derby.

The storm could include 60 mph wind gusts and penny-sized hail.

Forecasters warn that straight-line winds could blow down trees and power lines and damage mobile homes and other buildings. They say heavy rainfall could also result in flash flooding.

At least two storms with heavy rains have already passed through Richmond County since 2 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect across central North Carolina, including the Sandhills, until 9 p.m.
