ROCKINGHAM – Just four days after former NASCAR driver Kyle Petty stopped by Rockingham Speedway, the billboard that he stood beside for a photo has come down.

The billboard, which had the name of the track and contact information for tickets, was taken down Monday morning due to the future expansion of Highway 1.

The billboard sat in the area which is marked off by stakes where road workers will soon begin building extra lanes near The Rock.

The expansion will be similar to what was done nearby Richmond Senior High School.

According to Christopher Stovall who is overseeing the widening project, the posts that have served as fencing for the property of the track will be coming down on the US 1 side from where the billboard stood to where US 1 and Highway 177 meet, but Stovall noted that the rock that stands in front of the office of the track should be well out of the way of the expansion.
