ROCKINGHAM – State Representative Ken Goodman (D-HD-66) said he will support Governor Roy Cooper’s call for a special session of the State Legislature in October to deal with Hurricane Florence recovery.

“I support Governor Cooper’s decision to call the General Assembly back into session on October 9th.  There is so much to do in Richmond, Stanly, and Montgomery counties to remove debris, repair roads, check dams, restore basic services, and get schools running again.  It’s time for Republicans and Democrats to come together to tackle these many challenges.”

“This is not a time for partisan politics.  Our state is hurting.  The recovery is going to be over a long period of time.  We need to show our citizens that we can work together to help those who need it,” said Rep. Goodman. One of my top concerns as a part of the Hurricane Relief fund is making sure our farmers, farm families, and agribusiness interests are helped.  CBS Radio News was reporting late last week that initial estimates are that $350 million dollars have been lost in this year’s tobacco crop.

I am confident that other crops such as soybeans, cotton and sweet potatoes will be affected as well.

These losses could be staggering for rural North Carolina.  I plan on working closely with the NC Commissioner of Agriculture Steve Troxler, Governor Roy Cooper and Larry Wooten with the NC Farm Bureau to determine the damages and losses across our region and state.  Then I will work with these leaders and other legislators to find solutions and assistance for our farming communities.

Our rural communities have been hit hard, we need to make sure we help our farmers and agribusiness sector recover from this devastating hurricane.
