N.C.’s Apple deal named worst of 2021

RALEIGH — The $846 million subsidy deal that North Carolina struck with Apple just topped the “year’s worst” list of a nonpartisan economic think tank. The Center for Economic Accountability selected the 39-year agreement to put Apple’s campus in Research Triangle Park as the “Worst Economic Development Deal of the Year,” saying that its annual $21 million cost to the state led the list of reasons.

OPINION: Corporate handouts are not capitalism

Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are two of the richest men in the world, and while both are clearly brilliant titans of industry, neither of them achieved that status without multiple handouts from the government. Musk’s Tesla and SpaceX have received nearly $5 billion in government aid over the years in various forms — grants, environmental credits, tax breaks, discounted loans, and more — while Amazon received more than $3.7 billion in taxpayer subsidies at the federal level alone.

On May 8, my wife and I pulled into a local gas station and filled the family car's tank. It wasn't intended as a smart move, nor did it result from a premonition. It was just dumb luck. Within 24 hours, we were driving past gas stations with yellow plastic bags over the pump handles and "no gas" signs at the lot entrances.
