ROCKINGHAM — Head coach Ashleigh Larsen was pleased with Richmond’s effort on Monday despite coming up short on the scoreboard.

The Lady Raider volleyball team hosted Pinecrest High School, making up a match from late August.

Battling in another intense Sandhills Athletic Conference match, Richmond lost 3-1. Set scores were 18-25, 21-25, 25-20 and 17-25.

On the heels of a three-set loss to Union Pines last week, Larsen said the team showed improvement against a quality conference opponent.

“I thought the girls were productive all around,” Larsen said. “On defense and offense they were able to make adjustments. Our serving was pretty aggressive tonight and we moved the ball around.

“There were some errors in the first and second set that kind of cost us,” she added. “All in all, the girls had a good bounce back, especially after Thursday’s scores. Despite the loss, I’m proud of how they played.”

Continuing its busy homecoming week, Richmond (5-5, 2-2 SAC) will host Lee County (2-6, 0-3 SAC) on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

That will be followed by a non-conference match at Pine Forest on Wednesday.

JV Lady Raiders drop third straight

The Richmond junior varsity volleyball team couldn’t get back in the win column on Monday.

Also hosting Pinecrest, the JV Lady Raiders fell in straight sets 2-0. Set scores were 12-25 and 20-25.

“I was very proud of the energy the girls had tonight,” head coach Melissa Dennis said. “We got stuck in a few serve-receives and were not able to get back.”

The JV Richmond team (5-5, 1-3 SAC) will host Lee County on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
