MOUNT GILIEAD — Town Creek Indian Mound announced on Facebook Thursday that it will open to the public Friday June 5.

The state historic site has been closed since the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources suspended public operations at all locations, except state parks and trails on March 17.

N.C. Historic Sites announced that locations began opening June 2.

However, the reopening comes with new procedures in place to help ensure the safety of staff and visitors, including:

• Limiting visitation.

• Virtual Museum and Self-Guided Tour Information available online.

• The restrooms, picnic area, site grounds, and nature trail will be available for public use.

• Closing some areas and programs.

• Installing hand sanitizer station and increasing the frequency of cleaning high touch public areas and restrooms.

• Installing protective barriers at ticket sales and information desks.

Areas that remain closed include:

• Visitor Center

• Village Site Buildings

• Drinking Water Fountain

Town Creek’s post also included the following message: “Visitors are encouraged to follow the ‘Three Ws’ as outlined by the N.C. Dept. of Health and Human Services — WEAR a cloth face covering; WAIT in line at least six feet away from others, and WASH hands frequently or use hand sanitizer. If you are experiencing symptoms of illness, we ask that you postpone your visit.”

The site will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. on Sundays.
