Meteorologists are watching the tropical Atlantic with extra close attention as the anticipated ramp-up of an already record-setting hurricane season begins, and one budding system is likely to strengthen into the next named storm of 2020 by this weekend.

Isaias ramped up to an 80-mph Category 1 hurricane during Thursday night, shortly after pulling away from Hispaniola and will now churn through the Bahamas, just north of Cuba, before making a run along the Eastern seaboard of the United States this weekend to early next week.

It's been a fast start to the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, with four named storms already in the books and a new record for early-season development less than one month into the official start to the season. AccuWeather forecasters are now monitoring Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico waters for a possible flurry of new development during the first part of July, some of which could dampen the upcoming Fourth of July holiday weekend.

ROCKINGHAM — Tropical Storm Michael continues to dump rain in North Carolina and Virginia as it continues northward.

The weakened system made its way through Richmond County with heavy to moderate showers and gusty winds in the late morning hours into the afternoon.

Several roads — including Yates Hill Road, Airport Road and Ann Street — were reported to have flooded areas, according to a list set up by Jimmy Herring on the group Facebook page What’s Up Richmond County.
