Vehicle Slides into Guard Rail 

ROCKINGHAM - Emergency responders were dispatched Monday morning around 10:50 a.m. to a single vehicle accident on Highway 1 in front of the Waffle House.

After hitting the curb the vehicle slid into the guard rail.

Occupants in the vehicle stated that the driver was using his cell phone and took his eyes off of the highway, thus causing the accident.

One occupant was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Responding units were the East Rockingham Fire Department; Cordova Fire/Rescue; First Health Richmond EMS; Richmond County Sheriff’s Office; and North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The accident is being investigated by the Highway Patrol.

Beach Traffic Crash on 74 By-Pass

ROCKINGHAM - Sunday Afternoon around 3:15 p.m. emergency responders were dispatched to a three-vehicle collision on 74 By-Pass.

The accident occurred as traffic was slowing to exit at the Highway 1 Exit ramp 311. 

One vehicle exiting was rear- ended and the third vehicle also slowing was then hit from the rear as well.

All of those involved in the accident were examined by EMS personnel.

 One patient was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Responding units were: Cordova Fire and Rescue; First Health Richmond EMS; and the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The accident was investigated by the Highway Patrol.

ROCKINGHAM - On Tuesday, July 3rd at approximately 4:30 p.m., emergency responders were dispatched to a single vehicle accident on Highway 74 By-Pass.

When they arrived on the scene the driver stated that he was traveling west and could not remember what occurred next.

He stated that he was diabetic and the investigating officer requested that EMS transport him to the hospital for further observation. 

The driver was traveling from Florida to Winston Salem at the time of the crash.

Units responding included: Cordova Fire Rescue; First Health EMS; North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The Patrol was further investigating the cause of the accident at the hospital.

Two Vehicles Collide on Mizpah Road 

EAST ROCKINGHAM - Emergency responders were dispatched to a two-vehicle collision around 11:50 a.m. Monday morning when one vehicle crossed the center line.

When responders arrived on scene each driver was requesting medical attention.

After paramedics checked out the patients they were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The accident occurred on Mizpah Road about 200 yards before the intersection with Highway 1 South.

An eye witness traveling behind the west bound vehicle stated that the east bound vehicle crossed the center line striking the other vehicle and causing it to spin numerous times before both vehicles ended up in a ditch.

Responding to the accident : Cordova Fire Rescue; ,First Health Richmond EMS; Richmond County Sheriff’s Office; and North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The accident is being investigated by The Highway Patrol.

EAST ROCKINGHAM - Before East Rockingham Fire Department personnel were able to get all their equipment back in service on the evening of Saturday, June 23rd, they were dispatched to their second fire.

Less that two hours after they were dispatched to a fire on Central Avenue, another call came in regarding a residence on  111 First Street (Aleo) where smoke was showing underneath a structure.

On arrival firefighters discovered that the residence was filled with smoke but no origin was detected.

A positive pressure fan was setup to push the smoke from the interior of the structure.

The owners were not at home when the call was made and had not returned at the time of this article.

Cordova Fire Rescue supplied mutual aid to East Rockingham also.

This was the third structure fire to which East Rockingham and Cordova Fire Departments responded within a period of 36 hours.

EAST ROCKINGHAM - The second structure fire in two days in East Rockingham occurred on the evening of Saturday, June 23rd.

Personnel from the East Rockingham Fire Department were dispatched at 8:28 p.m. from Emergency Communications.

The address of this fire was at 156 Central Avenue in East Rockingham.

Units on arrival discovered heavy smoke at the front of the structure and flames escaping from the roof at the rear.

The heavy smoke made it hard for firefighters to reach the origin of the fire but once they were able to enter, it was quickly extinguished. 

Cleanup and finding remaining hot spots took firefighters around two hours before the first units began marking back into service.

Cordova Fire and Rescue assisted East Rockingham Fire Department on the fire.

The structure was not occupied at the time of the fire and the last tenants had on moved out two weeks before.

Structure Fire on Mizpah Road

ROCKINGHAM - Emergency Communications got a call at 2:49 a.m. Saturday morning reporting smoke and flames at 157 Mizpah Road.

On arrival units discovered that the fire was actually located on Mayes Drive off of Mizpah Road.

A mobile home was fully engulfed in flames as the East Rockingham Fire Department personnel arrived.

No one was in the structure at the time of the fire.

There was reason to believe that the mobile home had not been occupied for some time.

East Rockingham Fire Department was aided on the scene by Cordova Fire and Rescue with a tanker.

Richmond County Sheriff’s Office deputies were also on the scene at the time of the fire.

ROCKINGHAM - Rains, though needed in the area, contributed to vehicle accidents on Wednesday.

Around 8:00 p.m., troopers were called to a single vehicle accident on Airport Road near the intersection of Patterson Street.

A Chevrolet SUV ended up in a ditch with the cause being determined to be rain-related.

No one was injured and only troopers with the North Carolina Highway Patrol were dispatched to the accident.

Troopers were waiting on the tow truck to arrive and were finishing the investigation at 8:30 p.m.

Single Vehicle Accident on 74 By-Pass

ROCKINGHAM - First responders were dispatched Wednesday afternoon to an accident in the westbound lane of traffic near the 311 exit on the HW 74 By-Pass.

On arrival responders discovered that an SUV traveling west had lost control and collided with the cables located in the median of the highway.

The driver of the vehicle was the only occupant and needed no medical attention.

Units responding were the Cordova Fire Rescue and the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Responders checked back in-service with the Patrol remaining on scene to investigate the accident.

Structure Fire on Stokes Road

EAST ROCKINGHAM - On Monday morning, June 11th, at 6:02 a.m.,  Emergency Communications dispatched the East Rockingham Fire Department to a structure fire at 110 Stokes Road.

The fire was located near the intersection of Mizpah Road.

Units on arrival found smoke escaping from both ends as well as from the eves of the structure.

Firefighters found the fire's origin to be in the front room and it had appeared to have been smoldering for some time.

Units responding included : East Rockingham Fire Department; Cordova Fire & Rescue; and Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
