Which do you think is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? Why do drug dealers still live with their parents? Which matters more, nature or nurture?

These aren’t the questions you think of when you think of economists. But they are just the type of questions that Steven D. Levitt started asking in his book, “Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything.”

HAMLET - Frederick Branch was a pioneer in the war and the fight for equal rights for all races. Starting small as a drafted enlisted man, he became the first African-American officer of the United States Marine Corps. This was a huge leap in the right direction and one that has placed Fredrick Branch in the history books.

HAMLET - Florence Walker was born in Johnston County in 1919.  In 1938, Florence moved to Hamlet to attend the Hamlet Hospital School of Nursing, graduating with her three-year nursing degree in 1941.

Florence met her husband, Robert, during this time, while he was a patient at Hamlet Hospital. He was an employee of the Seaboard AirLine Railroad and had suffered a back injury while working.

In 1941, Florence passed the State Board of Nursing Exam and received her license to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina.

HAMLET - You may have seen the 1975 movie of this book. The movie starred Jack Nicholson and, although it was wonderful and the acting was spot on, it still did not do this book justice.

It is an oldie but a goodie and deserves to be mentioned in my recommendations.

Billy Bathgate Comes to Hamlet in 1990

HAMLET - Billy Bathgate is a novel written in 1989 by author E. L. Doctorow. The novel won the 1989 National Book Critics Circle award for fiction in 1990, 1990 Faulkner Award for Fiction, and the 1990 William Dean Howells Medal.

The story is set in 1935 and told in the first person by Billy "Bathgate" Behan. Billy is a fifteen year-old boy who first becomes the gofer and then surrogate son/protégé of fledgling gangster Dutch Schultz.

In late 1990, the Walt Disney Production Studio came to Hamlet, and transformed our Main Street to look like a 1930’s Bronx town in order to film Billy Bathgate.

HAMLET - Harriet Wolf, famed and beloved author, has a final confession. It can be found only in the final book of the series that made her a famous writer. But does that book even exist? And if it does, does anyone know where to find it?

This engrossing novel goes through the whole twentieth century and three generations of women. The book tells the story of a mother, her daughter, and two granddaughters. One of the granddaughters is the only person that knows about Harriet’s seventh novel. Will the truth ever be known, or is Harriet's story, the story each of these women ache for, gone forever?

HAMLET - "A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots." - Marcus Garvey.

I am an avid reader of historical fiction. I love books placed in a real place and time but with new and developed fictional characters. I also love genuine history, real stories about real people doing amazing things. That’s what The Monuments Men is all about.

Frank Marchant - Photographer of Early Hamlet

HAMLET - Frank Marchant, a photographer, was born in Pennsylvania in the 1800s. During his time in Pennsylvania he studied civil engineering. Due to poor records of the day, where he studied is unknown.

In the early 1900s, Marchant had moved to Hamlet, North Carolina as an engineer for the Seaboard Air Line Railway.  However, Marchant had always had an interest and talent for photography so, in 1907, Marchant opened a photography studio in Hamlet on the second floor of O. T. Goodwin's wholesale grocery located on Raleigh Street.
