Betty Maples

ROCKINGHAM — On Monday, Jan. 27, 2020, at the age of 93, Betty Covington Maples, affectionately known as Blue, departed this life and entered into the Kingdom of Heaven.

Blue was born Oct. 22, 1926 in Richmond County, a daughter of the late Jim Legrand and Mary Nichols Covington. She was a graduate of Rockingham High School, Class of 1944, and a member of West Rockingham United Methodist Church. She loved her family and being outside working in her azaleas and garden. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, William H. Maples Jr.; and grandchildren, John William Webb, Katherine Floyd Cassidy and Carrie Elizabeth Floyd.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Martha M. Webb (John) of Rockingham, William H. “Bill” Maples III (Janice) of Rockingham, Melinda Floyd of Rockingham, and Amanda Harrill (Glenn) of Rockville, Indiana; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jimmie Taylor of Fayetteville.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Mrs. Maples will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2020 in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham with the Rev. Larry Chandler officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband in Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will see friends from 12:45–1:45 p.m. Friday at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and at other times at Mrs. Maples’ home.
