ROCKINGHAM — Carol Ellen Swanner Melton, 84, of Rockingham, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2022.
Mrs. Melton was born April 22, 1938 in Richmond County, a daughter of the late William Lester and Hettie Elizabeth Hildreth Swanner.
She was a graduate of Pembroke State University and Appalachian State University where she received her Masters in Education degree. She taught in Arlington, Virginia, and Richmond County Schools, Richmond Technical Institute and also at Brown Creek Correctional Facility. She and her husband owned Myrtle Beach Trailer Park and were former owners of the Admiral Motor Inn.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Curtis Melton Jr.; their son, Curtis L. Melton; and brother, Robert Coleman Swanner.
She is survived by her sister, Rebecca Swanner Sherrill; niece, Barbara Schoonover; great-nephew, Robby Coleman Bingham; and brother-in-law, Jimmy Melton.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, April 29, 2022 at Eastside Cemetery with the Rev. Joe B. Wilkes Jr. officiating. The family will greet friends following the service.
