Cynthia Gail O’Brien

HAMLET — It is with great sadness that we announce that Cynthia Gail O’Brien, 83, of Hamlet, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2021 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

She was born Nov. 12, 1938 in Richmond County, a daughter of the late Benjamin Hycel and Mildred Stanley O’Brien.

She graduated from Hamlet High School in 1956. She attended Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in Columbia, South Carolina, and graduated from Southeastern School of Nursing in Lumberton. After graduating college she worked for many years at Cape Fear Valley Regional Medical Center and retired in 2007 from Womack Army Medical Center. She was a lifelong member of Fellowship Methodist Church in Hamlet.

Cynthia’s caring and generous spirit could be felt by anyone she came in contact with. Cynthia was an avid lover of the outdoors and spent much of her time at the Black River enjoying the serene beauty and solitude it encompassed. Cynthia was a true animal lover and cared for her many dogs, as well as the dogs of friends and family.

Surviving, a brother, Richard Stanley “Rick” O’Brien and wife Carol Clark O’Brien of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; nephew, Richard Landon “Ritchie” O’Brien and wife Joyce Wadsworth O’Brien of Goose Creek, South Carolina; great-nephews, Benjamin Clark O’Brien and Daniel Landon O’Brien.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for memorial contributions be made to RCC Foundation Chris Clark Memorial Scholarship, P.O. Box 1189 Hamlet, NC 28345; or Scotland Co. Humane Society, 1401 West Blvd., Laurinburg, NC 28352.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. at Richmond County Memorial Park with the Rev. Dan Blair officiating. 

The family would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Mrs. Betty Carter and Boyce Carpenter for your love and constant support for all of us during Cynthia’s illness.
