Donald James Goebel

ROCKINGHAM — Donald James “Don” Goebel, 34, of Rockingham passed away May 11, 2021 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

He was born Dec. 14, 1986 over Orange County, a son of Donald Phillip Goebel II and the late Joy Jones.

Don served five years in U.S. Army and was deployed multiple times overseas in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He joined with honorable service from Feb 2006 to May 2011 as a wheeled vehicle mechanic. He received the prestigious awards of Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon and Driver and Mechanic Badge during his term of service. He held his military service as one of his greatest accomplishments.

Don began his adventurous life by being born prematurely in a helicopter over Orange County. He was kind and humble and had the innate ability to make anyone laugh and did it with an easy grace. Though at times he seemed quiet, his love for his family and friends was loud and deliberate. He had an understated vivaciousness that charmed everyone, and he was fiercely protective. His smile could brighten an entire room and it was infectious to all that knew him. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He was not here for a long time, but he left everyone behind with a lifetime of good memories.

A graveside service will be conducted Friday, May 21, 2021 at 2 p.m. at Eastside Cemetery with the Rev. Charlie Tyler officiating with military honors.
