Doris Weldon Cannon

ROCKINGHAM — Doris Weldon Cannon, 91, of Rockingham, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, May 22, 2022.

Mr. Cannon was born Dec. 1, 1930 in Andrews, South Carolina, a son of the late Cornelius Boss Cannon and Mary Norton Cannon.

He was member of Living Waters Pentecostal Holiness Church and was the former owner and operator of Cannon’s Supermarket and later Cannon’s Auto Sales. He served on the Richmond County Board of Commissioners for 12 years, enjoyed training and showing Tennessee Walking Horses and enjoyed going to the Holiday Restaurant, where he was affectionately known as “the mayor.” 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Lucille Player Cannon; grandson, Lee Outlaw Jr.; and siblings; Ossie Lambert, the Rev. Mannie Cannon, Florence McCants, Lorie Cannon, Marvin Cannon, and Katie McCants.

He is survived by his daughters, Glenda Cannon Outlaw (Ricky) and Doris Ann King (Keith); grandchildren, Bob Bryant, Kevin Rainwater, Marla Parker, Jeanna Cloninger, Jeremy Rainwater, Dori Ann Rainwater and Sabrina Friend; 18 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Eugene Player; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 26, 2022 at Abundant Life Church with the Rev. Joe Wilkes, the Rev. Albert Ivey, the Rev. Marvin Taylor and Gary Payne officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 9:45–10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church and at other times at Mr. Cannon’s home.
