Jack Yates

CORDOVA — On Monday, Feb. 24, 2020, Henry Claude “Jack” Yates Jr., 92, a longtime resident of Cordova, completed his journey here on earth.

Jack was born Dec. 9, 1927 in Richmond County, the son of the late Henry Claude and Edna Garrett Yates.

He had served his Lord as a member at Cordova United Methodist Church, where he had served on various boards and committees. He served his family as a loving husband, father and grandfather and served his country in the U.S. Army. He had been a member of the Rockingham Lions Club and co-owner/manager of OK Bowl in Rockingham. While serving in the U.S. Army, he was trained as a dental technician and that training led him to open Richmond Dental Lab in Rockingham from where he retired.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Reba Frazier Yates in 1996, and a sister, Margie Britt.

Surviving are his wife, Marilyan Watts Thomas Yates of the home; sons, Tony Yates (Kim) of Ellerbe and Sam Yates of Rockingham; grandchildren, Garrett Yates (Laura) of Ellerbe, Elizabeth Potterfield (Trip) of Waxhaw, and Chelsea Yates of Rockingham; great-grandchildren, Rett, Nora and Sophia Potterfield and Quinn Hilton; sisters, Peggy Yates of Pinehurst and Joyce Britt of Madison, Mississippi; stepchildren, Michael Thomas of Pinehurst and Michelle Barefoot (David) of Raeford and their children, Jonathan Thomas and Danielle Barefoot.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27 at Cordova United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Griswold officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park.

The family will see friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and at other times at the home in Cordova.
