James Alfred Chappell III

RALEIGH — James Alfred “Chip” Chappell III, of Raleigh, passed away on Oct. 14, 2021.

Chip was born in Rockingham, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Alfred “Jimmy” Chappell Jr. He graduated from Richmond Senior High School, as well as ECU and was a founding member of SAE, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering Technology. Chip spent the majority of his career in the manufacturing and pharmaceutical industry and served as a board member of ISPE CASA for many years.

Chip’s love for life was evident in his enthusiasm, humor, love and laughter; always giving to others and never expecting anything in return. He had an infectious smile, was devoted to family and friends, never met a stranger, and as a friend said recently, “that might be the happiest man I know.”

Chip proudly attained the rank of Eagle Scout and was recognized for his acts of bravery in helping to save a drowning victim, and identifying a house fire on his local paper route. He had many passions in life but most prominent was his love for travel, the ocean and scuba diving.

He traveled the world in search of the next amazing dive spot and gained many true friends that shared his passion. Chip’s love for sports was apparent in his fervent devotion for the ECU Pirates and he was a prior proud member of the ECU Pirate Club as well as the Raleigh Sports Club. He was a lifelong Christian and active member in BSF, Bible Study Fellowship.

An outdoor celebration of Chip’s exuberant life will be held Sunday, Oct. 24, 2021, at 2 p.m., at “Red Door Farm,” 4122 Carpenter Pond Road, Durham, NC 27703.
