James Dalton Smith

BENNETTSVILLE — James “J.D.” Dalton Smith, 87, of Bennettsville, South Carolina, passed away Friday, May 13, 2022 at McLeod Medical Center, Cheraw.

He was born Nov. 20, 1934, in Marlboro County, South Carolina, son of the late Hollis Samuel Smith Sr. and Lucille Chavis Smith.

Mr. Smith served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was an excellent mechanic, owning and operating State Line Garage in Bennettsville. He also was an electrician in the textile industry. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hollis Smith Sr. and Lucille Smith; brothers, Frank Smith, and only four days prior, Hollis Smith Jr.; sister, Louise Johnson; and brother-in-law, Johnny High.

Mr. Smith is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Frances Leviner Smith, of the home; daughters, Dale English (Ronnie) and Marcy Hatcher, all of Bennettsville, and a special third daughter, Susan Gaskins of Wallace; grandchildren, Mandy Shaw (Marcus) of Wallace, James White of Hamlet, Joni Rowe (Shad) and Shane English (April), all of Bennettsville; great-grandchildren, Hailey, Erika, Anakin, Nealey, Miley, J.J., Abel, Bryndan, and Ashlyn; brother, Boag Smith of Bennettsville; sister, Joann High of Woodruff, South Carolina; and sister-in-law, Lois Smith of Hamlet.

The family will have a private Celebration of Life at a later date.
