James Henry Dunson Jr.

ROCKINGHAM — James Henry Dunson Jr., 76, of Rockingham, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2022 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital-Pinehurst.

He was born Aug. 13, 1945, in Warrenton, son of Priscilla Alston Dunson and the late James Henry Dunson Sr.

James served our country in the United States Army and later began his 44-year career as a conductor with CSX Railroad.

James was an unforgettable person. To know him was to love him and he never met a stranger. Most knew him as Jimmy D, but his favorite title was Papa. He would rope the moon for his grandbabies; they were his most prized possessions. He loved eating breakfast at the Holiday restaurant, “tinkering” with things with his son-in-law, Kevin, and rabbit hunting with his brother and their friends from his hometown of Warrenton. He liked his coffee hot and fresh, called his mama every night at 8:30, and showed his love through acts of services.  His motto was “I’ll never sell a gun, but I’ll buy one.”

His heart was beautiful and he extended those graces to anyone he met. He could recite the Bible, and passed all his best qualities to his daughter, Brittnee, who believed he hung the moon and scattered the stars. He was their Superman and he was invincible. He will forever be remembered for his kind nature, quick wit, and genuine soul.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Henry Dunson Sr.; and a sister, Ella Dunson Moore.

James is survived by his wife of 45 years, Katy Guthrie of the home; daughters, Brittnee Benton (Kevin) and April Prevatte (Joey), all of Rockingham; mother, Priscilla Alston Dunson of Warrenton; grandchildren, Brooklyn, Shimmer, C.J. and Breslyn; brother, Don Dunson (Mary) of Warrenton; sister, Glenda Walker of Silver Springs, Maryland; sister-in-law, Diane Elders (Ricky); nephews, Akil Walker and Curt Dunson; and nieces, Nikki Walker and Bebe Walker.

Visitation will be Saturday, April 23, 2022 from noon-1 p.m. at Harrington Funeral Home.

The Celebration of Life service will begin at 1 p.m., following the visitation, in the chapel of Harrington Funeral Home, with Pastor Kane McKenzie officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Richmond Memorial Park.
