Johnie Martin

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Johnie F. Martin (Jan. 23, 1936 to May 26, 2022) passed away peacefully at home with his family present. 

He will be remembered as a man who loved his family, his country, and dedicated his life to serving others as a baseball coach.  

Johnie was born in Enid, Mississippi, and raised in Memphis, Tennesse. He graduated from Humes High School on June 1, 1954 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on June 2, 1954.  After three years of active-duty service as a corporal, he returned to Memphis and began a 31-year career as an electrician at Dupont.  

Johnie also spent most of his personal time on a baseball field, coaching kids. His accomplishments include many championships and he was ultimately inducted into the Memphis Park Commission Hall of Fame.

Johnie is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Wilma Martin; his brother, Kenneth Martin; and his great grandchild Brylie Walker. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Joan Liberto Martin; three children, Mike Martin (Dianne), Jonna Martin, Jennifer Underhill; six grandchildren, Blair Walker (David), Ali Hagenstad (Erik), Nick Dawson, Brantley Martin, Dalton Underhill and Garrett Underhill; and one great grandchild, Joey Grace Walker.

A gathering of family and friends for Johnie will be held Tuesday, May 31, 2022 from 1 to 2 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens, 3700 North Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN 38133. A celebration of life service will occur Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at 2 PM, 3700 North Germantown Parkway, Bartlett, TN 38133. A committal service will follow at Memphis Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens.
