Mary Patricia Mulholland Rembert

HAMLET — It is with heavy hearts that we bid a final farewell to Mary Patricia Mulholland Rembert, 81, of Hamlet, who went to her heavenly home on Dec. 25, 2021.

This remarkable woman lived her life in service to others and touched many hearts along the way. She will be well-remembered for her boundless compassion, immense kindness, admirable intellect, and stoic determination.

Mary was born to Richard and Eunice Mulholland on March 10, 1940, in Butte, Montana. Later, Lorin Banfield became her loving stepfather, making her the oldest of six siblings. After briefly trying her hand in California, she returned to Montana and earned her nursing degree from Montana State University. She launched her career as a registered nurse at Butte’s St. James Hospital.

Eventually, Ms. Rembert set out on a thrilling adventure as a traveling nurse, spending time at various locations across the U.S., including Seattle, Washington, Phoenix, Arizona, and Florence, South Carolina. All the while, she raised three young boys as a single mother. Her sons, Lorin, Darren and Bryan, were the apple of her eye. In addition to her profession, motherhood was her greatest pride.

Ultimately, Mary would secure a nursing position at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital (now known as Northeast Medical Center) in Concord, where she worked until her retirement in 2005. Even in retirement, she continued to serve others as a hospice volunteer and through her volunteer commitments to Habitat Restore’s Kannapolis and Rockingham chapters. After moving to Hamlet in 2018, she also offered her time and expertise to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital until the COVID-19 pandemic forced her to remain at home.

This doting mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was an avid reader and gardener who enjoyed cooking, traveling, and spoiling her beloved cat, Lucy. With many dear friends and relatives spread out across the country, she made it a priority to keep up with all of them regularly. In fact, the last vacation she took was to her Montana birthplace, where she spent much quality time with her loved ones. This, she proclaimed, was her all-time favorite trip.

Mary was a devout Christian and found her faith-based family as a parishioner at Kannapolis’s Blackwelder Park Baptist Church and later, Rockingham’s Community Church. It was at these holy sanctuaries that she felt most at home. Her relationship with Jesus Christ was an inspiration to many.
