Medriath Gertrude Kiker

SPENCER – Medriath Gertrude Kiker, 89, passed away Feb. 24, 2021 surrounded by her sister and brother-in-law. 

Medriath was born Feb. 17, 1932. She was next to the oldest of nine children born to the late Lonnie Fincher and Gertrude Sikes Kiker. 

Medriath graduated from Rockingham High School in 1950 and then graduated from the Charlotte Memorial Hospital School of Nursing Program in 1953. Medriath worked in New York City for many years in a variety of hospital specialties and as well in Durham, Chapel Hill, Wilmington, Rockingham, Atlanta, Georgia, Pinehurst and Southern Pines.

Quoted by Medriath: “I had dreamed of becoming a nurse since age six and the nursing medical field was the most intriguing, captivating and exciting time of my life.”

While in New York, Medriath also was involved in the arts, and all avenues of higher learning and activities. Medriath also traveled abroad for sightseeing and expanding her knowledge of the world.

Medriath is survived by brothers, Lonnie Kiker of Siler City, Everett Kiker (Polly) of Rockingham; sisters, Ellar Hicks (Bill) of Cleveland, and Julia Black (Danny) of Weaverville. In addition, she is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Medriath was preceded in death by sisters Rebecca Nichols and Harriet Swanson; and brothers, David Kiker and Lynn Kiker.

Medriath loved all animals, especially her cats, Tuxedo, Manny, Angel and Kaleidis. They were her constant companions.

There will be a graveside service Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Eastside Cemetery, Rockingham. There will be a register book available for people to sign from 12:45-1:45 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021 at Watson-King Funeral Home in Rockingham.

In place of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Pines Animal Shelter, Caring Hearts for Canines, PO Box 1219, Southern Pines, NC  28388; and Novant Health Hospice, Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House, 1229  Statesville Boulevard, Salisbury, NC  28144.
