OBITUARY: Barbara Jewell Childers Deaver

Barbara Jewell Childers Deaver, 82, of Leland, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Sept. 25, 2023 at her residence, holding hands with her daughter, older granddaughter and youngest great-granddaughter by her side.

She was born Aug. 17, 1941, in Richmond County, daughter of the late Rev. Lloyd Walter Childers Sr. and Lois Watson Childers.

Barbara attended First Baptist Church of Wilmington, with her daughter. She worked mostly in sewing, something she enjoyed doing and making things for her family. She worked with Burlington Industries in Cordova, and later would pick up little jobs she did for enjoyment.

In earlier years, after moving to Wilmington and later to Ocean Isle Beach, she was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Wilmington. Barbara and her husband, Charles, returned to the Rockingham/Hamlet area where they attended Faith Baptist Church in Rockingham and Mount Carmel Free Will Baptist Church in Rockingham, where her nephew the Rev. Mike Childers pastors.

Along with her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Deaver; son, Cary Byron Deaver; and brothers, Jimmy Childers, Donald J. Childers Sr. and William Dale Childers Sr.

Barbara is survived by her daughter, Lorie Ann (Candy) Deaver Bailey of Leland; son, Charles Robert “Bobby” Deaver (Gaylynn) of Hamlet; eight grandchildren, Jennifer L. Taylor Thomson, Mitchell Glenn Taylor Jr. (Holly), Cary Byron Deaver II (Jenn), Charles Robert Deaver Jr., E. Brooke Deaver Hilton (Lex), Johnathon Brent Deaver (Nicole), Brittany L. Deaver Sewell (Dustin) and Thomas Allen “Tad” Deaver; 14 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth-Ann Juliet Thomson, Tommie Izabella Jewell Bailey-Taylor, Beau Byron Deaver, Harper Bryn Deaver, Aiden, Rylan, Trinity, Bailey Marie Hilton, Samuel Lexington Hilton III, Austin Cole Deaver, Johnathon Braxton Deaver, Paisley Lynn Sewell, Declan Thomas Deaver and Zane Allan Deaver; sister, Sarah Childers Leviner (Benny); brothers, Walter Childers of Rockingham, Tommy Childers (Gay) of Rockingham, and Charles Childers of Mount Pilot.

Barbara had a special place in her heart for her sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and her preacher, Jim. She had a special circle of loving people that was there for her with sending cards, gifts, conversation, hellos and smiles.

Before Barbara’s health declined, she enjoyed reading, spending time with family and friends, crafts, playing cards with family and friends, and traveling. Then and now, she enjoyed the beach, going out, flowers, music, singing, going to church and having her bible study and worship at night before bed.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023 at 5 p.m. at Richmond County Memorial Park with the Rev. Mike Childers, Evangelist Mitchell Taylor Sr., the Rev. Ronnie McLean and the Rev. Jonathan Osborne officiating. Burial will follow the service.
