Boyce Franklin “Fuzz” Smith, 82, of Rockingham, passed away Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023 at his residence.
He was born Nov. 5, 1940, in Richmond County, son of the late Roosevelt Smith and Ola Smith Smith.
Boyce worked for more than 43 years with Burlington Industries. He was an active, lifelong member of Cordova United Methodist Church and served in many capacities over the years, as well as the administrative chairperson of the board.
He was an avid sports fan, loving all sports but especially baseball and church league softball, in which he was a player, coach and umpire. Boyce loved coaching little league baseball during his lifetime. He also loved Richmond Raider football. In his earlier years, he was a Golden Glove boxer.
Boyce had quite the sense of humor and enjoyed sharing that with his grandchildren, all of whom were his hearts. Being the supportive grandfather that he was, he was always available to be present for them in all of their endeavors. He was a wonderful husband, father and “Papa.”
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Kay Roberts Smith; son, Frank Smith; and brothers, Robert Smith, James Henry “Curly” Smith, and Milton Smith.
Boyce is survived by his daughter, Pam Meacham (Greg) of Rockingham; grandchildren, Drew Meacham, River Meacham, Natalie Meacham, Sarah Meacham and Delaney Smith; daughter-in-law, Linda Smith of Rockingham; sister, Hazel Smith of Cordova; brother-in-law, Jimmy Roberts of Cordova; caregiver, Nancy Leviner; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Monday, Aug. 7, 2023 from 5-7 p.m. at Cordova United Methodist Church.
The funeral service will be Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2023 at 4 p.m. at Cordova United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bobby Fletcher officiating. Burial will follow at Richmond County Memorial Park.
At other times, the family will receive friends at the family home, 105 Pine Ledge Road, Rockingham.
